The year was 1993, I was 18 years old and Dad helped me purchase an investment property with some friends after I’d received an insurance payout from a car accident I was involved in when I was just 11.
A few years later, I began a 10 year stint in London and Mum’s worst nightmare come true. I fell in love with an Englishman! After purchasing an old house we planned to renovate and build a second house on the garden.
Little did we know the GFC was lurking, which resulted in us losing all of our profit in a very short space of time. The council declined our planning application and within two years I had moved home, a 33 year old single woman, tail well between my legs.
$85k in debt, with a fractured wrist and no employment for 3 months I not only had to rely on my family for financial support but also needed my aunt to do up my bra in the mornings! As an extremely independent young woman this was quite a challenging and confronting period for me.
A decision was made…
While laying on my single bed mattress on the floor under a Winnie the Pooh doona, breathing in the cold air of Melbourne I decided life was as bad as it was going to get. I made a pact with myself.
I enrolled in some life coaching, secured a fantastic job at a property investing company in my hometown of Brisbane, got myself a wealth coach who helped me set some goals and started practising sound money principles while starting to pay down my debt and eventually save.
My career progressed quickly, I met my husband-to-be, adopted a furry child we named Belle, started to build our investment portfolio, brought a nest where we hope to start a family very soon and my business, Wealthology was born.
