So when I first sit down with people who are looking to get ahead financially in life, I ask them what's important to them. What are their goals? What are they trying to achieve? What does the end result look like? You know, what does retirement look like for you? Are you sailing around the world on a fancy yacht? Or you dragging the caravan behind the car? What are you doing? What does your retirement look like? Where are you living? Who are you surrounding yourself by? What kind of events might you be going to? What kind of clothes are you wearing? What kind of car are you driving in? These are all really important things to help you understand what you need to do to get the life that you desire. So firstly, we sit down and we do a goal setting session. Look at a time frame. So how many years until we would like to retire, and what does retirement mean? To me, retirement means having the choice to do all those wonderful things that you've always wanted to do. It may mean that you drop your job down to two days a week. It may be that you start your own business. It may be that you give up working all together and travel around the world. I don't know. It's up to you what you want to do. But before we can help you get what you want, you need to understand what it is that you actually desire. So goal setting's very, very important. We all have two choices: We can make a living or we can design a life. Here’s how to do the latter.
The most important benefit of setting goals isn’t achieving your goal; it’s what you do and the person you become in order to achieve your goal that’s the real benefit.
Goal setting is powerful because it provides focus. It shapes our dreams. It gives us the ability to hone in on the exact actions we need to perform to achieve everything we desire in life. Goals are great because they cause us to stretch and grow in ways that we never have before. In order to reach our goals, we must become better.
Life is designed in such a way that we look long-term and live short-term. We dream for the future and live in the present. Unfortunately, the present can produce many difficult obstacles. But setting goals provides long-term vision in our lives. We all need powerful, long-range goals to help us get past those short-term obstacles. Fortunately, the more powerful our goals are, the more we’ll be able to act on and guarantee that they will actually come to pass.
